What is Track Lighting?

There are many ways to light up a room, from chandeliers to soft lights. It’s easy to get overwhelmed with the number of options, but the best way to look for lighting is to decide what characteristics you need. One popular type of lighting system is track lighting.

What is Track Lighting?

As its name implies, track lighting is a lighting feature that uses a ceiling-mounted track or rail with individual light fixtures branching off. With other light fixtures, the light bulbs are twisted into the socket that creates the electric connection to light the bulb. The difference with track lighting is that instead of it being only the bulb, the entire light fixture connects to the track to draw energy.

Track lighting has two major parts. It has the track, which is wired to power and holds the conductors for the heads. This is also the part that is connected to the ceiling or wall, with an opening facing down or out. The other part of track lighting is the heads. The heads are the bulb-holding fixtures connected to the power source inside the track.

There are two basic types of lighting as well. There are plug-in light fixtures and hardwired light fixtures. Plug-in track lights do not require electrical wiring, but they must be located nearby outlets. On the other hand, hardwired track lights need to have an electrical connection made during installation and are best handled by a professional electrician.
